A mammoth amount of Rs 10790 cr has been allotted by the Central government for the state of TN with regard to the installation of smart meters in the power lines.
It is noteworthy that TN has got 3.25 cr household electricity connections and 22.87 cr agricultural electricity connection and 9.75 lakhs cottage electricity connections.  It is important to note that smart meters must be installed in all the electricity connections in the state.
For the installation of smart meters in as manya s 13 states across India under the streamlined distribution sector scheme of the Central government an amount of Rs 3.03 lakh cr has been earmarked. For TN, an amount of Rs 10790 cr has been allotted and of that Rs 8600 cr would be issued in the phase one.
It is learnt that a tender would be floated before 15th of December to select those companies that would provide the smart meters. By 2025-26, the smart meters installation work would get over. At T. In Chennai, 1.09 lakhs of smart meters have been installed under the Smart City project. Point to be noted is that these smart meters have been installed here under the postpaid scheme. A decision has been taken to convert them into a prepaid scheme.
